453rd Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force
2013 was the 70th anniversary of Old Buckenham's opening. Hollywood legend Jimmy Stewart was Operations Officer and Walther Matthau served here.
In honour of the 70th Anniversary we are busy working on a commemorative DVD, which will include the stories of the people who fought and died here, as well as those who lived and worked on the base. Further details can be found on the DVD page.
In addition to the DVD we are delighted to be able to offer a new book by Keith Sowter, a local aviation historian, entitled Aircraft of the 453rd. The book is available, free of charge by clicking here: Aircraft of the 453rd.
The 453rd flew 259 missions in B-24 Liberators. They dropped 15,804 tonnes of bombs and in the process lost 58 aircraft. Most importantly 366 servicemen lost their lives serving from Old Buckenham. In time for the 70th Anniversary the memorial to the 366 has been moved to a new memorial garden, with a figure 8 path to mark the 8th Air Force.
