453rd Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force
2013 is the 70th anniversary of Old Buckenham's opening. Hollywood legend Jimmy Stewart Executive Officer, and Walter Matthau served here during the war.
The 453rd flew 259 missions in B-24 Liberators. They dropped 15,804 tonnes of bombs and in the process lost 58 aircraft. Most importantly 366 servicemen lost their lives serving from Old Buckenham. In time for the 70th Anniversary the memorial to the 366 has been moved to a new memorial garden, with a figure 8 path to mark the 8th Air Force. Later in 2013 we will release a commemorative DVD, including the reminiscences of veterans who were present on the base and their families. Further details can be found on the DVD page.
