USAAF 453rd BG

Hollywood legend Jimmy Stewart was the first Operations Officer of Old Buckenham when it started life with its first and most important residents; the USAAF 453rd Bombardment Group.

453rd Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force

2013 was the 70th anniversary of Old Buckenham's opening. Hollywood legend Jimmy Stewart was Operations Officer and Walther Matthau served here.

On Remembrance Sunday 2015, we opened the new 453rd Bombardment Group Museum. Please either click on the Museum link above or visit to find out more about the home of the largest collection of 453rd Memorobilia in existance.

In addition to the Museum.  we are delighted to be able to offer a new book by Keith Sowter, a local aviation historian, entitled Aircraft of the 453rd. The book is available, free of charge by clicking here: Aircraft of the 453rd.

The 453rd flew 259 missions in B-24 Liberators. They dropped 15,804 tonnes of bombs and in the process lost 58 aircraft. Most importantly 366 servicemen lost their lives serving from Old Buckenham. In time for the 70th Anniversary the memorial to the 366 has been moved to a new memorial garden, with a figure 8 path to mark the 8th Air Force.
